The collection is organized in the following series: A. letters, letter fragments, telegrams, and postcards (ca. 45 items) written by Clara Barton from 1904-1911; B. letters (six items) written to Clara Barton from 1899-1907; C. official correspondence (ca. 100 items) to Ms. Barton, almost all from the National First Aid Association; D. other correspondence, not to or by Ms. Barton from 1896-1922; mostly by Mary Kensel Wells and Roscoe Wells; E. typescript essays about Clara Barton; F. documents about the Association from 1906-1924: members lists, reports of meetings; G. miscellaneous notes, papers, and printed items; H. various newspaper clippings about Clara Barton and the Association.

On December 2, 1905, Mrs. Tunis G. Bergen brought together a group of Brooklyn residents at the Barnard Club House on Remsen Street to form New York City's first borough-based Red Cross organization.
